Uganda is Africa’s first to legalize morphine

Published on Apr 3, 2014
Al Jazeera English

The world’s seven richest countries consume 84 percent of the world’s supply of legal opiates. But in the developing world, just eight percent of patients who need medical morphine have access. Medical morphine costs about two dollars a week per patient. Red tape and misinformation are to blame for the unequal distribution, and it’s patients in the developing world that are losing out. Some African medics consider it addictive and are reluctant to give it to patients. But that’s changing in Uganda. It’s become the first country in the continent to allow nurses to prescribe morphine to patients. But whether you have access depends largely on where you live. Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Luwero district in Uganda
